5 Myths and Misconceptions About Invisalign You Should Stop Believing
Most people who ask us about Invisalign have already heard something that put them off. It hurts. Everyone can see it. It only works for small problems. So they wait another year.
Here’s what we usually tell them. Of the 5 myths and misconceptions about Invisalign we hear most, four are wrong. One is partly true, and that’s the one that decides whether aligners will work for you.
We’re the orthodontics team at Elite Dental Studio. We’ve been treating patients since 2020, and our clinic in R.S. Puram, Coimbatore is one of four ISO 9001 certified Elite clinics. Nobody gets a quote from us before an X-ray.
Below, we’ve gone through each myth the way we’d explain it to you in the chair, with the research behind it.

Myth 1: Does Invisalign Only Work for Minor Teeth Problems?
Partly true, and we’d rather be straight with you about it. Aligners work well for most mild to moderate problems. Very severe bite or jaw problems usually still need braces, and sometimes surgery.
In dental terms, crooked teeth or a bite that doesn’t meet properly is called malocclusion. The everyday cases we see, like crowded front teeth (teeth overlapping because there isn’t enough room), small gaps or a mild overbite, are usually fine for aligners.
The research backs this up. An overview of 18 systematic reviews in Clinical Oral Investigations (2022) found good support for aligners in mild to moderate cases, but not for severe ones.
So when would we suggest braces instead? Usually when:
- a tooth is badly twisted
- the upper and lower teeth meet far out of line with each other
- the problem is in the jaw itself, not only the teeth
Patients often ask us, “Is Invisalign worth the extra money?” It depends on your case. If aligners can do the job, you’ll usually get a result comparable to braces. If they can’t, we’ll tell you, because paying more for clear trays won’t get you a better result.
That’s a call an orthodontist (a dentist trained specifically in straightening teeth and fixing bites) should make after checking you. We’ll walk you through your braces and aligner options before you decide anything.
Myth 2: Will Everyone Notice You’re Wearing Invisalign?
Mostly no. In a normal conversation, people don’t notice the trays. If anything gets noticed, it’s the attachments.
Attachments are tiny tooth-coloured bumps we stick onto a few teeth. They give the tray something to hold, so it can turn or push a tooth the right way. Not everyone needs them, and some people need only a few.
They aren’t invisible, though. Up close, on the front teeth, some patients can see them in the mirror, and a few find that annoying at first. Most stop thinking about them within a week or so. For the first couple of days, your tongue will keep finding them. That’s normal.
Compared with metal braces, there’s no metal on show at all. One tip: take the trays out before tea or coffee. They stain, and stained trays are much easier to spot.
Myth 3: Is Invisalign Completely Painless?
No, it isn’t completely painless. But most people tell us it’s a lot easier than they expected.
Every new tray pushes your teeth a little further, so for the first day or two, your teeth feel tight and a bit sore. Then it settles until the next tray. You’ll usually switch trays every one to two weeks. Don’t be surprised if the soreness starts a day late. That happens to quite a few people.
Patients who’ve had metal braces before often say aligners are the easier of the two. There are no wires poking your cheeks and no brackets rubbing your lips.
The first week is the hardest. New pressure, new bumps on your teeth, a new routine. Some patients quietly ask themselves if they’ve made a mistake. By the time the second tray goes in, that feeling has usually gone.
A few things that help:
- Put a new tray in at bedtime, so you sleep through the tightest part
- Eat softer food for a day after switching
- Check with us before taking any painkiller, so we can suggest one that’s safe for you
- Call us if a tray cuts your gum, or if the pain gets worse instead of better
Myth 4: Does Invisalign Always Take Longer Than Braces?
Not for mild to moderate crowding. It often takes about the same time as braces, but only if you wear the trays 20 to 22 hours a day.
A 2024 systematic review in Clinical Oral Investigations looked at this and found no real difference in treatment time between aligners and braces for mild to moderate crowding. The authors said the evidence is still limited, so we see it as a good sign rather than a promise.
Here’s the catch we explain to every aligner patient. Braces can’t come out, so they work all day and night. Aligners only work when they’re in your mouth. If they sit in the case for a few hours every day, your treatment slows down.
The routine we suggest:
- Put your trays in straight after brushing in the morning.
- Take them out only to eat, or to drink anything other than plain water.
- Brush or rinse before you put them back.
- Keep the case with you. Trays wrapped in a tissue tend to end up in the bin.
- Switch to the next tray on the day we’ve given you.
How long your case will take depends on how much your teeth need to move. We’ll give you a timeline after a digital scan, which is a 3D picture of your teeth taken with a small camera, so there’s no messy impression material. You can read more about how we plan Invisalign treatment before you come in.
Myth 5: Will Your Teeth Stay Straight Once Treatment Ends?
No. After braces or aligners, teeth tend to move back towards where they were. That’s why you’ll need a retainer.
We call this drifting back relapse. Your gums and the bone around your teeth take time to settle in the new position, and until they do, teeth can slowly shift. The same 2022 overview found relapse was more common after aligners than after braces, though gum health was better with aligners. So with aligners, your retainer matters even more.
A retainer holds your teeth where we’ve moved them. It can be a clear tray, a thin wire fixed behind your front teeth, or both. Most people wear it full time for a while, then only at night. We’ll set that schedule based on how your teeth moved.
One thing worth asking any clinic before you start: what happens after treatment, and are retainers included in the quote? You don’t want to find out at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Invisalign more expensive than braces?
Usually, yes. How much more depends on how complex your case is and how many trays you need, and retainers or extra refinement trays can add to it. We offer Bajaj and Zest no-cost EMI if you’d like to pay in instalments.
Can adults over 40 get Invisalign?
Yes. Age isn’t the problem. Your gums and bone are what we check, and if you have gum disease, we treat that first, then start straightening.
Will Invisalign affect the way I speak?
You might lisp a little for the first few days. Your tongue gets used to the trays quickly, and most people sound normal again within a week. Reading out loud at home helps.
Can I eat or drink with my aligners in?
Just plain water. Take them out for meals, tea and coffee, and brush or rinse before putting them back. Food stuck around the attachments can lead to cavities.
How often will I visit the clinic during treatment?
We’ll set your visits based on your case. At each one, we check that your teeth are moving as planned and the trays still fit. Skipping visits can slow things down if something’s off and nobody catches it.
