Oral medicine and radiology is the dental specialty focused on diagnosing conditions of the mouth, jaw, face and surrounding structures using clinical examination, dental imaging and diagnostic investigation. If you have a persistent mouth sore, unexplained jaw pain, white or red patches in your mouth or a dental problem that needs imaging before treatment can be planned, this is the right department.
At Elite Dental Studio, our oral medicine and radiology team offers specialist diagnosis and dental imaging support at our clinics in Calicut, Kochi and Kannur. Free OPG X-ray is available for new patients at consultation.

Some oral medicine conditions resolve with treatment. Others require referral for specialist investigation. Your oral medicine specialist reviews your findings and explains your options clearly after examination.
Dental imaging at Elite Dental Studio uses digital radiology technology, which delivers lower radiation exposure compared to older X-ray systems and produces clearer images for more accurate diagnosis. Pregnancy details must be shared before any X-ray is taken.
An OPG, or orthopantomogram, is a panoramic dental X-ray that shows all your teeth, both jaws, the jaw joint and surrounding bone in one image. It is used to check wisdom teeth position, plan implants, assess gum bone levels, plan orthodontic treatment and screen for conditions that affect the whole jaw.
Elite Dental Studio offers a free OPG X-ray for new patients as part of the first consultation. This gives your dentist a full view of your dental condition before recommending treatment.
TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, the joint that connects your jaw to your skull. Problems with this joint can cause jaw pain, clicking when opening or closing the mouth, difficulty chewing and headaches.
Our oral medicine team checks the joint movement, bite relationship and facial muscles before recommending treatment. Management options include bite splints, jaw exercises, anti-inflammatory support and, in some cases, referral for specialist care. Severe structural jaw problems may require input from our maxillofacial surgery team.

Yes. A digital OPG X-ray delivers very low radiation exposure. It is a routine diagnostic tool used to get a complete picture of your teeth, jaws and bone in one image. Pregnancy must be disclosed before any X-ray is taken so the radiographer can take necessary precautions.
An oral medicine specialist examines the inside of your mouth including the gums, tongue, cheeks, palate and jaw joints. They look for sores, ulcers, discoloured patches, swellings and jaw movement issues. If something needs further investigation, they arrange appropriate tests or referrals.
A mouth ulcer that heals within 10 to 14 days is usually not a cause for concern. An ulcer that persists for more than two weeks, is larger than 1 cm, bleeds without injury, appears alongside other symptoms or keeps recurring in the same spot should be examined by an oral medicine specialist.
A CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) scan is a 3D dental imaging scan that provides detailed views of teeth, bone, nerves and jaw structures. It is commonly used for implant planning, wisdom tooth assessment, complex root canal cases and jaw joint evaluation. Your dentist recommends it when a standard X-ray does not provide enough detail.
Yes, most TMJ and jaw pain cases are managed without surgery. Bite splints, jaw exercises, diet modification, anti-inflammatory treatment and stress management are commonly used approaches. Surgery is considered only in specific structural cases that do not respond to conservative management. Your oral medicine specialist confirms the right approach.
