Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Kochi, Kannur & Calicut

Oral and maxillofacial surgery covers surgical treatment of conditions affecting the teeth, gums, jaw, face and surrounding structures. This includes wisdom tooth removal, surgical tooth extraction, jaw correction surgery, cyst removal and facial trauma management.

At Elite Dental Studio, our oral and maxillofacial surgery team handles a full range of dental surgical procedures at our clinics in Calicut, Kochi and Kannur. Every surgical case is assessed using clinical examination and dental imaging before a treatment plan is finalised.

Surgical Procedures Offered at Elite Dental Studio

Our maxillofacial surgery team provides:

  • Wisdom tooth removal: Removal of third molar teeth that are impacted, infected, causing pain or creating crowding.
  • Surgical extraction: Tooth removal through a minor surgical approach when a simple extraction is not possible.
  • Dental cyst removal: Removal of a fluid-filled cyst or lesion near the tooth root or in the jaw.
  • Orthognathic surgery: Corrective jaw surgery to address severe skeletal bite problems that cannot be managed with braces alone.
  • Jaw fracture management: Surgical care for jaw injuries or fractures resulting from trauma.
  • Frenectomy: Surgical release of a tight frenum for tongue tie, lip tie or spacing concerns in selected cases.
  • Pre-implant surgery: Bone grafting, sinus lift or other preparatory surgical procedures before implant placement.

All surgical procedures are planned after a clinical examination, dental X-ray and, where needed, a CBCT scan to assess the position of the tooth, surrounding bone and nearby nerves.

Wisdom Tooth Removal: What You Should Know?

Wisdom teeth are the third molars that erupt last, usually between the ages of 17 and 25. Not all wisdom teeth need removal. Removal is recommended when:

  • The tooth is impacted and cannot erupt fully due to insufficient space.
  • The partially erupted tooth is causing recurrent infection in the gum around it.
  • There is decay in the wisdom tooth or the adjacent tooth that cannot be treated.
  • The wisdom tooth is damaging the tooth in front of it.
  • The tooth position is contributing to crowding in the front teeth.

A dental X-ray confirms the exact position of the wisdom tooth and its proximity to nearby nerves before the dentist recommends removal. Simple cases are completed in one visit. Impacted cases may require a minor surgical approach with local anaesthesia.

Orthognathic Surgery: Correcting Jaw Position

Orthognathic surgery, also called corrective jaw surgery, is a planned procedure to reposition the upper jaw, lower jaw or both to correct severe bite problems that cannot be resolved with braces alone.

Conditions managed with orthognathic surgery include severe underbite, overbite, open bite, facial asymmetry and jaw pain caused by a significantly misaligned jaw. Treatment is always planned in coordination with our orthodontics team, as braces are typically part of the overall plan both before and after surgery.

What to Expect After Oral Surgery?

Post-surgical recovery varies by procedure. Most simple extractions and wisdom tooth removals heal within five to seven days for initial recovery. Swelling, mild pain and restricted mouth opening for a few days after surgery are normal and expected.

Surgical extractions and jaw procedures involve a longer recovery period. You will be given specific instructions on diet, pain management, rinsing and follow-up visits. Attending your post-operative check is important to confirm healing is progressing normally.

Faqs

What conditions are treated by Maxillofacial Surgeons?

Maxillofacial surgeons specialise in treating a wide range of conditions related to the face, jaw, and mouth. This includes fractures and injuries to the facial bones and jaws, corrective surgeries for facial deformities, removal of tumours and cysts, treatment of oral cancers, management of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ), and dental implant procedures, among others.

How do I choose the right Maxillofacial Surgeon in Kochi, Calicut or Kannur?

Choosing the right maxillofacial surgeon involves considering factors such as their expertise, experience, credentials, patient reviews, and the availability of advanced facilities and technology at their clinic.

Are Maxillofacial Procedures Painful?

Anaesthesia is used during maxillofacial surgeries to ensure that patients are not in pain during the treatment. While some soreness and swelling are expected after the treatment, your surgeon will prescribe the right medications to treat any pain that may arise afterward. To reduce pain and encourage quicker recovery, you must stick to your surgeon's post-surgery care instructions.
